When opportunity knocks, do you answer? I think most of us would like to think we would welcome a great opportunity with open arms… but it’s not always easy.
In my career, the best opportunity I was ever given was the chance to relocate to the East Coast to serve as the Director of Marketing for a small mom-and-pop shop in the fitness industry.
The owner had been my consulting client for 6 months and decided that she wanted my time and my attention — full time. The worst part about it was that I had to leave Austin... a city I loved. I did not want to move. I actually turned the opportunity down. But she made an offer I couldn't refuse.
So I moved to Maryland. It was supposed to be a 2-year gig.⠀⠀⠀⠀
I started out as a one-woman show — with no support staff and no budget.
Two years turned into six... and over the course of that time, I helped her grow her business from 1 store to 18. My marketing budget grew from $0 to $1.6m... and my staff grew from 0 to 6. It was quite a ride.
As you can imagine, with a budget like that, I was called on by every media salesperson in town. So I spent a lot of time learning how to make smart media buying decisions.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That job culminated in the opportunity to purchase a chain of fitness equipment stores here in Texas... which is what ultimately brought me back to Austin.
I learned so much during those 6 years... about myself, about marketing mom-and-pop-shops, and about being an entrepreneur.
Today, I look back and feel so grateful that I opened that door when opportunity knocked… because it taught me so much and ultimately led me to where I am today... here with you.
