Fitness After 40: Why Strength, Community, and Purpose Matter More Than Appearance

What if fitness wasn't really about looking different in the mirror?

What if it was about having the strength to climb the stairs at a museum, walk a challenging trail with your spouse, travel somewhere you've always dreamed about, or simply have the energy to enjoy your life?

That was one of the ideas that stayed with me after my conversation with Theo, founder of Get Age Fit.

For many adults, fitness can become more meaningful when the goal shifts from appearance to quality of life. Strength, mobility, endurance, accountability, and community can help create more opportunities to participate fully in the life you've worked so hard to build.

What Should Fitness Really Be About as We Get Older?

Theo created Get Age Fit around the idea that fitness should support the life you want to live.

After decades of building careers, raising families, creating businesses, and managing responsibilities, it's easy for nutrition and strength training to become secondary. But eventually, that can affect how much energy and physical freedom we have.

That's why I found Theo's approach so compelling. Instead of making aesthetics the center of fitness, he focuses on health, longevity, strength, mobility, and quality of life.

The question becomes less about “How do I look?” and more about “What do I want to be able to do?”

Why Is Strength About More Than Looking Strong?

Some of Theo's clients trained because they had somewhere they wanted to go.

One couple prepared specifically for a trip to Machu Picchu and wanted to be able to handle the steep steps. Another couple trained so they could walk the Camino de Santiago.

Those examples completely change the conversation around fitness.

The workout isn't necessarily the destination. It's the tool that helps you participate in the life you want.

Maybe your goal is traveling, hiking, walking with your spouse, playing with your family, or simply having enough energy to say yes to experiences.

Fitness can create possibilities.

Why Does Community Matter?

Theo described training, nutrition, and cardio as important pieces of the process, but he identified another ingredient as especially powerful: community.

At Get Age Fit, people celebrate one another's progress, including the small improvements that might otherwise go unnoticed.

That matters because change can be difficult when you feel like you're doing it alone.

When people encourage you, notice your progress, and celebrate small wins with you, fitness becomes more than a workout. It becomes belonging.

I've experienced another side of this through my own training. Having a trainer who knows your history, understands your capabilities, tracks your progress, and knows when to challenge you creates accountability and trust.

Sometimes someone else can see your strength before you can.

What Does Fitness Have to Do With Living Life on Your Own Terms?

This is where the conversation connected with something I care deeply about: defining your own success.

When I helped Theo with his rebranding, I had the opportunity to speak with some of his clients. One idea stayed with me: they wanted the ability to live life on their own terms.

That doesn't have to mean running a marathon or lifting an enormous amount of weight.

It might mean taking the stairs, traveling somewhere you've always wanted to visit, walking comfortably beside someone you love, or having the energy to enjoy your everyday life.

The goal isn't fitness for fitness's sake. The goal is the life that fitness can help make possible.

What Can We Learn From Theo's Story?

Theo's own transformation eventually led him toward a new career. He completed a 12-week transformation, people began asking what he was doing, and eventually they asked him to train them.

What began as his own personal process became the foundation for Get Age Fit.

I love that because entrepreneurship doesn't always begin with a perfectly designed five-year plan. Sometimes it begins by solving a problem in your own life—and realizing that other people need help solving it too.

What I Want You to Take Away

If you're thinking about fitness or aging, start with the life, not the workout.

Ask yourself:

What do I want to be able to do?

Then think about what kind of support would help you get there—whether that's a trainer, a community, a friend, or simply a structure that helps you keep showing up.

Good health isn't only about adding years to life. It's also about having the capacity to participate in those years.

And that's the lesson I took from my conversation with Theo.

You are strong.

Sometimes, we simply need the right support to remember it.
